Terry Likes, Ph.D., is the Department Head of Communications and tenured full-Professor teaching Broadcast Journalism at Tennessee State University in Nashville. He oversees the areas of Mass Communication, Speech Communication and Theater. Prior to TSU, Likes taught at Western Kentucky University for twenty years. In 2010 he won his seventh Broadcast Education Association award and fourth Radio/TV Digital News Association Edward R. Murrow award (2007-2010). In 2008 and 2009 he was awarded Scripps Howard Fellowships to attend the Academic Leadership Academy at LSU. He has participated in the Radio/TV News Directors Foundation “Excellence in Journalism Education” program via a faculty fellowship at WTHR-TV Indianapolis, IN. Likes has been a reporter for WFIE-TV Evansville, IN; worked with WKYU-TV Bowling Green, KY as a basketball announcer; and provided weekly political & media commentary for WSMV-TV Nashville, TN. During a ten year span overseeing student newscasts, his pupils won more than 200 KY Associated Press, Society of Professional Journalists and Hearst awards. Likes earned his doctorate at the University of Kentucky, has a Masters Degree from Western Kentucky University, BA from Maryville University-St. Louis and also attended Southern Methodist University as an undergrad and took graduate courses at SIU-Carbondale.
Likes is married to Tammy Garrison, former chief meteorologist for WDRB-TV in Louisville, Kentucky. Tammy now manages Magnolia Quarter Horses. The couple resides in Bowling Green, Kentucky.
