Quotation and Citation Homework
Part I. For each example, indicate whether you should or should not cite a source for the information in your paper.
Y=Cite the source
N=No need to cite the source
_____ 1. You have found essentially the same information in several sources; you use this information to make an important point in your paper.
_____ 4. You have summarized a major argument from a book. The argument took several pages to develop in the book but you have given the main idea in a couple of sentences.
_____ 5. You have quoted a colorful description from another source.
_____ 6. You have closely paraphrased (idea-by-idea) a passage from a journal article.
_____ 7. You have mentioned in your paper a curious detail which was mentioned in passing in another work.
Part II. For all of the examples below, you should cite sources (footnotes, endnotes, parenthetical notes), but you do not necessarily need quotation marks for all of them. For each example, indicate whether you should or should not use quotation marks.
Y=Use quotation marks for the whole sentence
Y/N=Use quotation marks for part of the sentence
N=Do not use quotation marks
R=Rewrite to make either a quotation or a summary
