Katherine Ashley

By Wes Weems

atherine, or "Kat" Ashley (d. 1565), as she is often referred was first a waiting gentlewoman and then her governess. Elizabeth was very close to Katherine and the few times that they were separated, due to primarily to the Queen of England and Elizabeth's half sister Mary I, she was distraught by her absence. Katherine married Elizabeth's primary gentlemen attendant John Ashley. She was imprisoned for a short time as a possible conspirator in the plot to marry Elizabeth to Thomas Seymour. She was later released. She was imprisoned again in Fleet Prison by Mary I and after her release was forbidden to see Elizabeth. When Elizabeth took the throne, this order was voided, and she was made Elizabeth's Lady of the Bed Chamber.
