Model for Rogerian Argument*
Sections Prompt Questions Examples
Define the Issue 1) What is problem/issue addressed? Fundraising strategies; money spent per student
2) What are the different positions presented? Fundraising: hasn't grown much in past five years (recession and no culture of giving); money per student: higher amount than other TBR schools--we don't evidence to show how money is used
Disagreements with Article 1) Was the writer fair in tone, voice, language, etc., in the presentation of material? The article is about two different issues: fundraising and money-per-student.  Article only contains one poor example of money not-spent.  The fundraising is steady or possibly increasing--not necessarily going down.
2) Are there any points of view not considered? How does fundraising stack up to comparable schools?  No real breakdown of money spent on campus?
3) Do the facts support the generalizations made? One broken desk does not an argument make.  What departments are suffering from lack of money spent?
Agreements with Article 1) Is the writer fair in tone, voice, language, etc., in the presentation of material? Does mention different ways of counting money and recession.  Does say fundraising hasn't decreased under Johnson.
2) How are the sources adequate/appropriate to claims?  Article uses quote from VP for Fundraising who mentions culture of philanthropy.
3) Do the facts support the generalizations made? Good info re. 40% (although more info would help).
Analysis of Common Ground or Mutual Goals of Both Positions 1) How do your personal experiences validate both agreement and disagreement with the article?  As faculty, we have received info on giving that we didn't before.   Homecoming activities not up to par for fundraising.
2) What are specific points where opposing sides might agree? Recession limits all fundraising (if we're still raising as much money during recession, isn't that a good thing?)  Good initiatives and focus on fundraising but need to show me the money!
Proposal(s) for Resolving Issue 1) What solutions does the article present? More alumni giving; creating culture of philanthropy; increasin communication about where funds go
2) What are other possible solutions? increase info to students about money spent on them; increased fundraising presence on website
3) What might both sides gain from a solution? More fundraising and accountability--audience less likely to think ill of TSU's competence; quality programs and students from donations; more efficient use of dollars per student; President has more time for other responsibilities.
