Elementary Education Licensure Program

Who: Undergraduate students seeking a four-year degree and Elementary School (K-6) Certification in the State of Tennessee

What: A four-year 120+ hour degree program consisting of approximately 60 semester hours of required courses  hours in to complete the A.S.T-K-6 (Associate of Science of Teaching) through VSCC and approximately 60 hours of required courses for the B.S. (Bachelor of Science Degree)  through  TSU at the VSCC campus.

Where: Volunteer State Community College (with some online and hybrid options) and  clinical placements in Sumner County Elementary Schools

When:

 

A.S.T. =Years 1 and 2:  Days, Nights, Weekends, and Web-Based Courses (Summer,  Fall, & Spring)

 

B.S. =    Years 3 and 4:  Two to three days/week   (Fall/Spring Semesters)

How:

 

(Years 1 and 2-VSCC)

Get Started:

1.       Apply for admission to Vol State and consult with a Vol State A.S.T. Academic Advisor

                       (See Catalog: http://catalog.volstate.edu/preview_program.php?catoid=11&poid=448 )

 

2.       Successfully complete all requirements for the A.S.T. –K-6 (including Praxis 1 or ACT requirements)

3.       During the final Spring semester of your A.S.T. program, apply for:

a.       Admission to Tennessee State University and

b.       Admission to the Teacher Education Program at Vol State for the following Fall. (See below.)

 

(Years 3 and 4-TSU at VSCC)

 

4.       Upon acceptance, begin two-year (Fall/Spring +Fall/Spring) B.S./K-6 Licensure program at VSCC through TSU

5.       Pass all required Praxis II exams prior to your final semester (Residency 2/Student Teaching).

6.       Successfully complete all course, clinical, Residency (Student Teaching), and Exit requirements.

TSU Teacher Education Program Admission Requirements

 Applications Due March 22, 2013

 

1.       A.S.T-K-6 degree conferred no later than the Spring or Summer term prior to the Fall Admit date to TSU Teacher Ed.

2.       Minimum 2.75 GPA

3.       Praxis I: Reading(174), Math (173), Writing (173) OR proof of ACT Score: 22 or above (composite)

4.       C average or above in all Math, History,  and Science Courses

5.       C or better in all English Comp and Education courses

6.       Acceptable Professional Disposition Rating   (e.g., professionalism, behavior, character, and demeanor of a    teacher)

7.       “Clean” Background Check

8.       Acceptable Ratings on Teacher Education Admission Interview (scheduled after above requirements are met)
